We ordered the $7.91 Dior athletic shorts in two sizes and commuted by bike in them for three weeks. The mesh lining, drawstring and print panels held up; the fabric-quality question and the size chart did not resolve.

Dior Black Athletic Shorts Review: Three Weeks of Cycle Commutes in the $7.91 Mesh-Lined Cut
Hands-on score
4.2 / 5

Editor verdict

A $7.91 loose, mid-rise short whose mesh lining, drawstring and print panels survived three weeks of cycle commuting. Fit tracked our flat measurements; the fabric-quality question and chart drift stay open. 4.2 / 5.

What works

  1. Polyester-blend shell stated as moisture-wicking and quick-drying; dried in about 25 minutes on our indoor hang test
  2. Mesh lining with no inner brief kept the short from doubling up under separate underwear
  3. Loose mid-rise cut with roughly 10 cm of waist stretch, plus six colorways up to XXXL

Watch-outs

  1. Fabric quality remains unverified: the one complaint in the record concerns a different Dior shorts replica
  2. Rep size guides are reported to carry around 2–3 cm of error, so our chart match may not repeat
  3. Thin shell and no inner brief give little support for heavier training

Editor score 4.2 / 5

You want a loose, mid-rise, mesh-lined short for commuting, running or casual court sessions, and you will request the seller's flat measurements before ordering.

You need documented fabric quality, a guaranteed chart match, or a built-in brief for support. None of those can be settled from this listing alone.

Most cheap sport shorts fail in boring ways: a drawstring that unthreads, a lining that bunches, an inseam that rides. So when the $7.91 Dior athletic shorts landed on the desk, we put them on a bike rather than a hanger. This is what three weeks of Manchester commuting, one run and one court session told us about the shell, the mesh lining, the waistband and the allover print.

What we ordered

The listing is SKU 7720477516, currently in stock at $7.91 against a stated original of $9.17. The tag price shown on the listing is 129, which is a regional retail marker rather than what the agent charges. We ordered the black colorway in two sizes, S and L, following our usual practice of buying twice where stock allows so the flat measurements can be scaled rather than trusted at one point.

The catalogue describes a synthetic blend shell, polyester by composition, with a mesh lining and no inner brief. It is listed as men's, mid-rise, loose cut, moisture-wicking and quick-drying, aimed at running, cycling, ball sports and general sport-casual wear, with spring and autumn named as the target seasons. Sizes run S through XXXL across six colorways: black, blue, green, orange, green-orange, and a black-white "AB face" option.

Flat measurements against the listing chart

We photographed both parcels before opening and logged their weight, then measured each short relaxed on the table. Our rule is simple: a listing chart is a claim, the tape measure is a reading.

MeasurementSize SSize L
Waist, relaxed flat34 cm38 cm
Waist, stretched44 cm49 cm
Outseam43 cm46 cm
Inseam16 cm17.5 cm
Leg opening, flat30 cm32.5 cm
Single short, weighed148 g172 g

Both sizes came in within the 1–2 cm tolerance the listing allows, so nothing here contradicts the seller's own numbers. That is a narrow win, not a guarantee. Buyers of Dior rep apparel have reported published size guides carrying roughly 2–3 cm of error, so the same reading could shift on a different production run. Stretch at the waist is generous: about 10 cm of give on each size, which is what makes the drawstring useful rather than decorative.

The mesh lining and the missing inner brief

Polyester shells at this price usually cut the lining, so the mesh layer is the most interesting detail on the garment. Because there is no inner brief, the short sits over separate underwear without doubling up, and the mesh adds a light stand-off between fabric and skin instead of clinging. On the bike, the lining stayed flat through four kilometres of stop-start riding and did not twist at the crotch seam. Under indoor lighting it reads as a single-layer short, which is the point.

The trade-off is honest: no inner brief means no support layer, and a thin shell means the shorts tell you when the saddle is hard. If you want a built-in brief, this is not that product.

Print coverage and panels

The graphic is the loudest thing about these shorts: a white allover print mixing paisley motifs with basketballs, stars and clover shapes, carried from the front across side panels that continue the pattern. Print registration on the black base was sharp and evenly weighted in both sizes we opened, with no obvious banding where the side panel meets the front. After one cold wash and air-dry, the print showed no lifting or chalky fading that we could see at arm's length. We treated that as a single-cycle observation only, not a claim about long-term durability.

Function: the quick-dry and breathability claims

We tested the drying behaviour in the most domestic way possible rather than a lab: rinse, wring, hang indoors at about 18°C. The shell felt dry to the touch in roughly 25 minutes, with the mesh lining trailing slightly behind. In the saddle and on a court session the fabric moved air and did not sit heavy when damp. That supports the listing's moisture-wicking and quick-dry language at the level a household test can, and no further. Both claims remain catalogue specifications, not measured performance data.

Value at $7.91

On our five-point scale, where 5 is excellent and 1 is very poor, the shorts earn 4.2 / 5. Fit and function tracked the listing closely, the mesh lining and drawstring behaved, and the print is genuinely distinctive for the money. Build is where it drops: the shell is thin, the seams are neat but light, and six colourways and a XXXL ceiling do not change what the fabric is. At this price the value is not in doubt; the ceiling on quality is.

What we could not settle

Two things stayed open, and we are leaving them open.

  • The fabric-quality question. In rep-buying communities, some buyers have criticised Dior shorts replicas for looking like cheap fabric and suggested returning them in favour of sellers known for Dior apparel. That was raised about a different Dior shorts listing, so it is a prompt to check, not a finding about this pair.
  • The "black-white AB face" colorway. We ordered black only and could not confirm from the listing how the two-sided option is printed or whether the reverse face changes the fit. Buyers choosing that variant should ask for photos of both sides first.
"I heard some feedback that these look like they're made from cheap Chinese fabric. Does anyone own these and can say whether or not they look okay?" — a rep-community buyer, on a different Dior shorts listing

Our practical advice is unchanged from the measurements: ask the agent for flat measurements of the actual piece, compare them to a short you already own rather than to habit, and request close-up photos of the fabric before committing. Everything else on this listing, from the drawstring to the print panels, we could check with our own hands.

Did the shorts actually dry quickly?

After a rinse and wring, the shell felt dry in roughly 25 minutes hung indoors at about 18°C, with the mesh lining a little behind. That is a household observation, not measured performance data.

Did the waistband move during cycling?

No. The drawstring held its knot across three commutes, and the elastic waistband did not roll or slide. Waist stretch measured about 10 cm on both sizes we opened.

What is the black-white AB face variant?

We could not confirm it. We ordered the black colorway only, and the listing does not detail how the two-sided option is printed. Ask for photos of both faces before ordering that version.
