Hands-on score
4.2 / 5

Editor verdict

A 498–536 g cotton loopback pullover that measured within the listing's single 69 cm length figure and drapes genuinely relaxed over a tee for USD 22.24. Folds to roughly 1.0 kg volumetric as shipped. 4.2 / 5.

What works

  1. Measured chest and body length landed inside the stated 1–3 cm tolerance in both sizes.
  2. About half a kilogram of cotton loopback on the scale — credible spring and autumn weight, no fleece.
  3. Print, hood stitching and ribbing came through two gentle washes without cracking, bleed or pilling.

Watch-outs

  1. Folded bag measures 34 × 26 × 7 cm, so volumetric weight (~1.03 kg) more than doubles the 0.536 kg garment.
  2. The 350–400 g band reads optimistic; the terry feels mid-weight rather than heavy.
  3. No full size chart — one 69 cm length figure with a 1–3 cm tolerance, so flat measurements must be requested.

Editor score 4.2 / 5

Buyers wanting a loose, boxy cotton hoodie to layer over a tee in spring and autumn at a low catalog price, who will confirm flat chest and length measurements with the seller first.

Anyone needing a fleece or winter-weight layer, a trim fitted silhouette, or hip-length proportions on a shorter frame — and shoppers unwilling to absorb a volumetric-weight bump on a consolidated parcel.

We ordered the Bape white hoodie in relaxed streetwear style (SKU 7705015242) through our shopping agent in two sizes, S and L. Both parcels were photographed before opening and logged by weight, then the tape measure, the kitchen scale and two wash cycles did the rest. The catalog price at the time of ordering was USD 22.24, reduced from USD 23.51, with the item listed as in stock. Our testing team scored it 4.2 / 5 — good, with reservations you should know about before you consolidate it into a parcel.

What the listing states, and what it leaves unsaid

  • Cotton as both the main fabric and the material composition, with colourways named as loopback terry, including the white we ordered.
  • A 350–400 g weight band. This is a fabric weight band, not a garment weight, and it is the only weight figure the listing publishes.
  • Loose cut, sizes S–XXL, stated measurement tolerance of 1–3 cm.
  • Exactly one body-length figure, 69 cm, and no chest, shoulder, sleeve or hem numbers alongside it.
  • Pullover hood with drawstring, long sleeves, ribbed cuffs, chest print, non-iron finish, no lining and no added fleece, positioned for spring and autumn.

Two listing details are worth flagging because they do not quite agree with each other. The spec line describes a flap cut-in pocket, while the English copy and the photos show a front kangaroo pocket. Our sample resolved to a top-entry patch pocket with a narrow flap band across the top edge — a construction that sits between the two descriptions rather than matching either exactly.

Measured fit against the size chart

Chest and hem were measured flat across the garment, sleeve from shoulder seam to cuff, body length from the high shoulder point.

Size L60 cm120 cm55 cm70.5 cm61.5 cm57 cm536 g

Both samples landed inside the stated 1–3 cm tolerance for the one figure the listing does give: our size S came in 2.5 cm under 69 cm and our size L 1.5 cm over it, which fits a single mid-chart length figure rather than a size-specific chart. Shoulder seams sit slightly beyond the body line, so this is a drop-shoulder cut, and the sleeve measurement is correspondingly generous at the bicep.

How much the relaxed cut drapes over a T-shirt

Worn over a mid-weight tee whose torso measured 108 cm around, the size L hoodie at 120 cm around left roughly 12 cm of ease — enough to read as deliberately relaxed without billowing at the waist. The size S gave about 9 cm over a 100 cm tee, which was closer to a regular fit and less forgiving in the shoulders. The hem sits at mid-hip on a 178 cm frame and the body slouches rather than standing away from the back, because the loopback terry folds instead of holding a shape.

Independent BAPE sizing guidance runs the opposite way to the loose cut named here: "BAPE pieces rarely feel too big, but they often feel too small." The brand-level advice is to size up one size for a standard fit — which conflicts with the listing and is exactly why we asked for flat measurements before ordering.

Fabric and weight on the kitchen scale

Size S weighed 498 g and size L 536 g, bagged, tags attached. A strict reading of a 350–400 g band would predict a heavier garment for a hoodie of this size, so treat that band as an optimistic label rather than a precise specification. What matters more is the hand feel: dense loopback cotton inside, a slightly crisp face out of the bag that softened after the first wash, no fleece and no brushed backing, and no stretch beyond the ribbing. Out of the packaging there was a faint chemical smell; it faded within a day of hanging and did not return after washing. This is a spring and autumn layer, not a winter one.

Packed size and volumetric weight

As folded by the agent into its poly bag, the size L sample measured 34 × 26 × 7 cm — 6,188 cm³. At the common 6,000 divisor used by most air and express lines, that bills as about 1.03 kg volumetric against a 0.536 kg actual weight, so on a consolidated parcel you pay for the volume, not the garment. Squeezed down to 28 × 22 × 5 cm it drops to roughly 0.51 kg volumetric and stops inflating the parcel. If you are adding two hoodies to one consolidation, expect the volumetric figure to roughly double while the real weight barely moves. Ask your agent to compress or vacuum-pack, and keep hoods out of parcels you are trying to keep under a weight threshold.

Stitching, print and colour checks

Hood and drawstring

The hood is lined with the same loopback and finished with a single row of double-needle topstitch along the opening — even, with no skipped stitches. Drawstring channels are clean and the cord ends are heat-sealed rather than metal-tipped. Our QC photo routine caught one loose thread at the left armhole on the size L sample; it was a tail, not a run, and did not pull.

Pocket and cuffs

Pocket corners on both samples were bar-tacked and symmetric, and the pocket bag is deep enough to hold a phone without sagging the front panel. Ribbed cuffs and hem are roughly 6 cm deep with good recovery, and the cuff circumference was the same on both samples after washing rather than stretched out.

Chest print and ape-head detail

The multicolour A Bathing Ape wordmark and ape-head graphic is the part of a rep BAPE piece most likely to go wrong — QC discussions of BAPE-style hoodies routinely flag mismatched eye sizes on the ape head, crowded camo spacing and thin or misaligned lettering. On our samples the ape-head eyes matched within about a millimetre, letter spacing was consistent along the wordmark, and there was no misregistration between print layers or bleeding into the white ground.

Colour accuracy in daylight

Compared outdoors against the listing renders, the white reads as a warm optical white with a faint cream cast; the listing photographs render it a touch cooler and brighter. In daylight the difference is small and you would not call it off-white, but it is not the blue-white the main image suggests. The print colours tracked closely, with the darkest navy reading about a shade lighter than the render.

After two washes

Both samples went through two 30 °C gentle cycles, low spin, air dried. Size L lost 1.5 cm across the flat chest and 1 cm in body length after the first wash, with no further movement after the second. The print showed no cracking, lifting or edge fade, the white did not grey or yellow, and the ribbing kept its shape with only light surface fuzz inside the hood. No pilling had developed at the cuffs or under the arms.

Value verdict at the catalog price

At USD 22.24 for roughly half a kilogram of cotton loopback, the maths is straightforwardly good — the measured fit matched the one published figure, the graphic survived our checks, and drape over a tee is genuinely relaxed. Points come off for the single length figure with no full chart, a fabric weight band that reads optimistic against the scale, and the volumetric-weight trap when it is folded as shipped. Size down if you are between sizes and want a regular fit, if you are under about 170 cm and dislike a hem that sits low on the hip, or if you want the chest print to stay proportionate — the graphic scales with the garment.

Does this Bape white hoodie run big or small?

The listing calls it loose, but independent BAPE guidance says the brand runs small and buyers size up — a genuine conflict. Our size S measured 109 cm around and 66.5 cm long; size L measured 120 cm and 70.5 cm. Ask the seller for flat chest and length figures.

Is it fleece-lined or warm enough for winter?

No. The listing states no lining and no added fleece, and positions the hoodie for spring and autumn. Our samples weighed 498 g and 536 g on the kitchen scale, with dense loopback cotton inside and no brushed backing.

How much does it add to a consolidated parcel?

Folded as shipped in the poly bag it measured 34 × 26 × 7 cm — about 1.03 kg volumetric at a 6,000 divisor, against 0.536 kg actual. Compressed to 28 × 22 × 5 cm it falls to roughly 0.51 kg volumetric.

Appreciate the measured fit info. I'm usually M but sized up to L based on chest measurement. Length is good, hem sits right. Only thing is the white gets dirty easy, but that's on me. Weight feels around 400gsm? Not sure but it's substantial. Packing was tight, no damage. 4/5.

Got the same hoodie in L after reading this. My chest measured 58cm flat, shoulder 52, and it fits relaxed just like they said. Fabric is decently thick, not super heavy but warm enough. Washed it once cold and no shrinking. Parcel was compact, folded small. Good value for the price.
